Nike Voice of the Athlete
A Guide to the Product Testing Program
While Nike does not distribute traditional free samples to the general public, the brand runs an official testing program called Nike Product Testing (where participants are known as WearTesters).
Grounded in the philosophy of serving the Voice of the Athlete—inspired by co-founder Bill Bowerman’s belief that "if you have a body, you are an athlete"—the program sends unreleased prototype sneakers, clothing, and gear to everyday athletes for real-world evaluation.
In exchange, testers provide vital feedback regarding performance, comfort, fit, and durability to help engineers refine products before they hit retail shelves globally.
What Items Are Available to Test?
Available products depend on active sport development categories and research needs:
- Athletic & Lifestyle Footwear: Prototype sneakers for running, basketball, soccer, training, and everyday wear.
- Apparel: Sweat-wicking shirts, technical jackets, leggings, sports bras, and training shorts.
- Sporting Accessories: High-performance socks, gloves, protective gear, and headwear.
Note: The vast majority of test items are plain prototypes without visible logos, often produced in neutral or all-black ("blackout") colorways to protect product secrecy.
Benefits
- Early Access to Prototypes: Try cutting-edge footwear and apparel months before their official public release.
- Direct Influence on Product Design: Your feedback directly alters final production models, helping fix issues with traction, chafing, or cushioning.
- Free Shipping Both Ways: Nike covers all costs, delivering test gear to your door with a prepaid return shipping label included.
- Continuous Testing Opportunities: Participants who submit detailed, timely feedback are prioritized for future testing invitations across different sports and seasons.
How to Join (Step-by-Step)
- Visit the Official Portal: Go to producttesting.nike.com.
- Select Your Category: Choose the appropriate option (Adult or Parent applying for a Minor).
- Submit Precise Measurements: Use a measuring tape to provide exact foot dimensions, chest, waist, and hip measurements.
- Log Your Athletic Routine: Detail your primary sports, weekly training hours, and workout environments (e.g., asphalt, indoor gym, outdoor court).
- Wait for an Invitation: When your profile and sizing match a prototype currently in development, Nike will send you an acceptance invite via email.
Tips to Increase Your Chances
- Be Exact with Measurements: Never guess or round up your sizing. Selection depends on hyper-specific prototype dimensions.
- Be Honest About Activity Levels: Nike needs a wide spectrum of testers, ranging from casual walkers to 60-mile-a-week marathon runners.
- Keep Profile Updated: Immediately update your sizing, address, or training habits in the portal if your details change.
- Submit High-Quality Feedback: During a test, write thorough, actionable survey responses. High-performing testers receive more frequent invitations.
Disclaimer
- Application Does Not Guarantee Selection: Submitting an application enters your profile into Nike’s candidate pool, but participation depends entirely on current sizing and testing demand.
- No Monetary Compensation: Test participants are not paid money; the program provides gear strictly for research purposes.
- Strict Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA): Prototype products are top-secret. Photographing, recording, or posting test gear on social media (Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, etc.) will result in immediate and permanent removal from the program.
- Gear Must Be Returned: At the end of the testing period (typically 4 to 8 weeks), test items must be returned so engineers can inspect physical wear and tear.
